Law enforcement in Sacramento are working a shooting incident that erupted on April 18 2026 at Howe Community Park while deputies were dispersing a large unsanctioned party of a crowd of several hundred.
How It Started
Deputies initially responded to the park on Howe Avenue at approximately half past six in the evening after being notified of people potentially armed with concealed firearms. Soon after, a second call came in concerning an alleged brawl occurring near the park.
An overhead unit flew over the park but found nothing to substantiate the fight report. Regardless, it was evident that several hundred individuals had congregated at Howe Park without any permit or approval.
When the Shots Rang Out
Law enforcement personnel began the process of clearing the park by setting up around the park's perimeter and making announcements instructing those gathered to clear out. About 15 minutes were spent for individuals to vacate.
It was during this dispersal that 20 to 25 gunshots were fired. Gunfire sparked chaos as hundreds ran. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies swiftly started searching for victims.
Those Who Were Hit
By the time the scene was secured, four individuals were found to have been shot. Those injured — made up of one woman and three men all believed to be in their 20s at the time of the incident — were taken to nearby hospitals. Medical teams stated that two victims were in serious condition, one sustained moderate wounds, and one sustained minor gunshot wounds. Fortunately, all four victims survived and were stable.
The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department arrived on scene and aided in treating those who had been shot at the scene.
What Investigators Found
The bulk of the shooting appears to have happened along the Cottage Way side of the park next to the Home Depot at the 2200 block of Howe Avenue. Crime scene investigators located additional shell casings throughout the Cottage Way area. Bullet damage were observed in the wrought iron perimeter fencing near the nearby Home Depot. The physical evidence showed that one of the gunmen had been sending rounds south from the Cottage Way area toward the Home Depot store. That Home Depot location was put under lockdown while law enforcement worked the area. CSI investigators check here and detectives stayed at the location late into the evening.
Suspect Information
Reports confirmed via scanner audio indicated that a suspect Kia was contacted by law enforcement in nearby Solano County. Four people were held for questioning. Deputies were heading to pick up the four detainees to pick up those detained for further questioning. Video that was reviewed confirmed that the shooting involved two separate gunmen.
